Cover Letter Tips

Tell a story

  • Tell a story from your career, doing that is a great way to demonstrate your skills and give the hiring manager some insight into your personality and work ethic.

End your cover letter with a call to action  and a reason for them to contact you

  • E.g I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss how my qualifications will be beneficial to your organization’s success.

Edit your cover letter

  • Proofread, proofread, proofread! Typos indicate to the hiring manager that you lack attention to detail and do not care about the process.

Name drop

  •  Do not be afraid to name-drop your friends or acquaintances who work for the company you are applying to.

Keep it on one page

  • A multi-page cover letter usually indicates that you are rambling, and unspecific, making you unappealing to most hiring managers.

Write a distinct cover letter for each company

  • Tailor your cover letters to individually address each company’s needs.

Clarify your abbreviations and acronyms

  • Make sure you spell out your abbreviations and acronyms on their first use.

Format your cover letter to be easy to read

  • Use bold letters for emphasis. This will help your qualifications stand out and focus the hiring manager's attention on them.

  • Use a default font that is easy to read, such as times new roman.
